This project is intended to achieve a goal that will be to integrate the gravel pit in its surrounding landscape, enhance biodiversity within the affected area as well as to demonstrate that it is possible to reconcile the extraction of aggregates with wildlife, conservation of nature and the socio-economic and cultural development of the population. The purpose is to create a natural environment to enhance and preserve both the flora as the fauna of aquatic and terrestrial environments to achieve the maximum possible biodiversity, ensuring that this Habitat this composed of a great variety of biotypes.

"ECOGRAVERA" carried out this purpose through these specific objectives:

- There will be a complete inventory of flora and fauna both at the beginning of this project as a time elapsed after its completion in order to check the evolution of the ecosystem.
- With native species, shrubby and forest repopulate the area, thereby creating an ecological corridor that also defines the plots and implementing plant screens separating the areas of exploitation of which the aim is to restore to minimize the visual impact.
- Creation of wetlands, green filters and adequacy of existing ones to ensure that vegetation is effective and diverse, as well as the arrival of animals whose life is linked to bodies of water.
- Establish itineraries with information panels along the banks of the river connecting wetlands, installing Bird observatories and create a space for education and biodiversity environmental communication, promoting tourism and economic development of the area.

      The above-mentioned objectives, is intended to manage a gravel pit conservation purposes that does not have to be incompatible with other uses through a proper zoning of the space allowing the coexistence of all possible activities. Extraction of aggregates is one of the activities that generate greater environmental alteration, however, with a proper performance, increasing biodiversity can be promoted.

 

   The project will be as follows:

-Visual inspection of the area, carrying out a detailed list of both plant and animal species, to recover the potential characteristics of the same.
-To create the ecological corridor and get the interconnection with neighbouring ecosystems (given that the main threat to biodiversity is the fragmentation of habitats) will be a repopulation of the boundaries between plots with native species, as well as the installation of plant displays.
- With regard to wetlands and water bodies, must take into account aspects such as the depth and number of lagoons; how, sinuosity and slope of the banks; the construction of Islands, nesting areas and innkeepers for birds etc; not to mention the establishment of the vegetation of ribera. Areas in which is going to develop a wetland should be interconnected between them to facilitate the passage of flora and fauna of each other.
- The itineraries with information panels translate activities in the quarry, an end, its subsequent use, flora and fauna of the different ecological niches and characteristics of soils. The location of the Observatory of birds will be next to aquatic ecosystems, with their corresponding information. A didactic classroom of environmental education for visitors will be enabled.

       But this project is to create added value for biodiversity, society and the company in question:

-Biodiversity and ecological richness will be enhance while preserving and encouraging cultural and landscape heritage of the area.
-Depending on the area in which is located this arid farms, to raise his inclusion in the "LIC banks of the Duero" where would function as "Level points", which together with the conventional runners improve connectivity between the various protected areas of the territory. To prevent their gradual disappearance should be considered its inclusion in the catalogue of wet areas, which is possible if we attend to the Royal Decree 435/2004.
- Will be provided to the area a tourist attraction attracting visitors and increasing the economic activity of the place
- will decrease the negative visual impact in the area, giving it a more attractive.
-From an agreement of custody of territory between the owner of the farm and an entity of custody will be achieved to protect the area of greatest ecological value without damage to the interests of the owner.
- Will improve the public perception of the gravel pit showing also the commitment of the company with the society and the environment
 

  

RESUMEN EN ESPAÑOL:

       A través de este proyecto se pretende alcanzar un objetivo principal que consistirá en integrar la gravera dentro del paisaje que la rodea, potenciar la biodiversidad dentro de la zona afectada, así como poner de manifiesto que es posible compatibilizar la extracción de áridos con la vida silvestre, la conservación de la naturaleza y el desarrollo socioeconómico y cultural de la población. La finalidad es crear un ambiente natural destinado a potenciar y conservar tanto la flora como la fauna propia de ambientes acuáticos y terrestres para alcanzar la máxima biodiversidad posible, procurando que dicho hábitat este compuesto por una gran variedad de biotipos.

"ECOGRAVERA" llevará a cabo dicho propósito mediante  estos objetivos específicos:

 -  Se realizará un inventario completo de flora y fauna tanto al inicio del presente proyecto como transcurrido un tiempo tras su finalización con el fin de comprobar la evolución del ecosistema.
 -  Repoblar con especies autóctonas arbustivas y forestales la zona de actuación, creando así un corredor ecológico que además delimite las parcelas e implantando pantallas vegetales separando las zonas de explotación de las que se pretenden restaurar para minimizar el impacto visual.
 -  Creación de zonas húmedas, filtros verdes y adecuación de las ya existentes para conseguir que el desarrollo de vegetación sea eficaz y diverso, además de la llegada de fauna cuya vida esté ligada a las masas de agua.
 -  Establecer itinerarios con paneles informativos a lo largo de la ribera del río conectando los humedales, instalar observatorios de aves y crear un espacio para la Educación y comunicación Ambiental de la Biodiversidad, potenciando el desarrollo turístico y económico de la zona.

      Con los objetivos citados, se pretende gestionar una gravera con fines conservacionistas que no tiene por qué ser incompatible con otros usos mediante una correcta zonificación del espacio que permita la coexistencia de todas las posibles actividades. La extracción de áridos es una de las actividades que genera mayor alteración ambiental, sin embargo, con una actuación adecuada, se puede favorecer el aumento de la biodiversidad.

 

Se realizará de la siguiente manera:

-  Inspección visual de la zona, efectuando un listado detallado de las especies tanto vegetales como animales, para recuperar las características potenciales de la misma.
- Para crear el corredor ecológico y conseguir la interconexión con ecosistemas vecinos (dado que la principal amenaza a la biodiversidad es la fragmentación de hábitats) se planteará una repoblación de los límites entre parcelas con especies autóctonas, así como la instalación de pantallas vegetales.
- En lo que respecta a los humedales y masas de agua, hay que tener en cuenta aspectos como la profundidad y número de lagunas; la forma, sinuosidad y pendiente de las orillas; la construcción de islas, zonas de anidamiento y posaderos para aves etc; sin olvidar el establecimiento de la vegetación típica de ribera. Las zonas en las que se va a desarrollar un humedal, deberían estar interconectadas entre ellas para favorecer el paso de fauna y flora de unas a otras.
- Los itinerarios con paneles informativos plasmarán actividades desarrolladas en la cantera, su fin, su posterior utilización, flora y fauna de los distintos nichos ecológicos y características de los suelos. La ubicación del observatorio de aves se hará próxima al ecosistema acuático, con su información correspondiente. Se habilitará un aula didáctica de educación ambiental para visitantes.

 

       Con todo este proyecto se pretende crear un valor añadido para la biodiversidad, la sociedad y la empresa en cuestión:

- Se potenciará la Biodiversidad y riqueza ecológica preservando e incentivando el patrimonio cultural y paisajístico de la zona.
- En función de la zona en la que se encuentra esta explotaciones de áridos, se puede plantear su inclusión en el “LIC Riberas del Duero” donde funcionarían como “Puntos de escala”, que junto con los corredores convencionales mejoran la conectividad entre las distintas áreas protegidas del territorio. Para evitar su desaparición paulatina debería considerarse su inclusión en el Catálogo de Zonas Húmedas, lo cual es posible si atendemos al Real Decreto 435/2004.
- Dotará a la zona de un reclamo turístico atrayendo visitantes e incrementando la actividad económica del lugar.
- Se disminuirá el impacto visual negativo de la zona, dotándola de un mayor atractivo.
- A través de un acuerdo de custodia del territorio entre el propietario de la finca y una entidad de custodia se conseguirá proteger la zona de mayor valor ecológico sin perjuicios para los intereses del dueño.
- Se mejorará la percepción pública de la gravera mostrando además el compromiso de la empresa con la sociedad y el medio ambiente.
